Solzhenitsyn in Samizdat

Odin den' Ivana Denisovicha [A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich]. Samizdat edition.

[Soviet Union: ca. 1975–1980]. Quarto (30 × 23 cm). Blue leatherette over boards; 78 pp. of typescript to rectos. A small number of typewritten and manuscript corrections throughout. Very good.

Samizdat edition of one of the most crucial moments of Soviet publishing, which laid the foundation for Solzhenitsyn's fame both in the Soviet Union and later abroad. The novella was officially published by Sovetskii pisatel' in 1963, but was later forbidden from being re-published from 1972 to 1988, and publications from the 1960s, including the book edition and the publications in "Novyi mir" and "Roman-gazeta" were widely confiscated from libraries and bookshops. Samizdat copies such as this ensured readers' continuing exposure to the text. This copy was produced in the mid- to late 1970s in Moscow, based on information shared by our source.
