First Polish Underground Comics

Zespól "4R" przedstawia: Solidarnosc – 500 pierwszych dni [Team "4R" presents: Solidarity – the first 500 days]. Samizdat comic book.

[Warsaw]: self-published, 1984. Quarto (29.8 × 20.8 cm). Original side-stapled pictorial card boards; 16 pp. With additional text and image to recto and verso of front and rear wrapper. A very good copy.

In the form of a comic book, this Polish samizdat publication presents the narrative of the first 500 days of the Solidarność movement, the first independent trade union formed in the Soviet Bloc. A note on the cover claims that all dialogues in the book are fragments of actual conversations and speeches. The book quickly became quite popular in unofficial circles, going through several editions. The first edition features a strip of tape along the spine and has the price printed to the rear cover. This appears to be a re-edition, most likely in late 1984 or 1985, without the indication of the price. The book could only be printed officially, and without danger of legal difficulties, after 1989, when the names of the authors were printed instead of the collective pseudonym 4R. The insides of the wrappers reproduce the “21 demands of MKS – Inter-Factory Strike Committee” (21 postulatow MKS), as well as the program of the Solidarity movement.

As of September 2022, KVK and OCLC show five copies outside of Poland.
