Robinson Crusoe for Russian Émigrés

Robinzon Kruzo [Robinson Crusoe].

New York: Izdanie Pervogo Izdatel'stva v Amerike (First Russian Publishing Corporation), [1918]. Octavo (20 × 14 cm). Original pictorial wrappers; 123 pp. Good or better; recent expert repair to spine; light soil to wrappers.

First edition of this classic novel in Russian translation, published by the émigré community in New York, abridged and illustrated for children. Enormously popular in the Russian Empire prior to the Bolshevik Revolution, the novel boasted close to twenty Russian translations and adaptations before 1917, including one edition re-printed by Tolstoy in his “Pedagogical Journal”. This edition was printed by the "First Russian Publishing Corporation" in New York, and seems to be the first version published in Russian abroad, likely appealing to the experience of the new émigrés who could identify with the plight of the novel’s protagonist. With publisher's catalog to rear, which includes titles such as “Ofitsery v Russkoi revoliutsii,” (Officers in the Russian Revolution) and “Russkie v Amerike” (Russians in America). The publisher was located at 31 East 7th St. in New York.

As of April 2021, KVK and OCLC show copies at Manitoba, NYPL, and Penn.
