Collection of Flyers for Cowboy-Themed Gay Nightlife.
Small group of seven flyers from the late 1970s and 1980s, advertising various cowboy-themed nights at bars and clubs in San Francisco, including: "Desperados Cowboy Night", offering a cash prize for "Worst Cowgirl Drag"; "J&Ds Chuckwagon" at The Stables; "Areno Rodeo Bar-B-Q" at the Arena; live Country & Western Sundays at Le Disque; a "$2,000 Cash Grab" with country music at the Devil's Herd Saloon; "New Years Weekend" at The Stables with a graphic for J&D's Chuckwagon Kitchen; and a January 1989 calendar of events for the Covered Wagon Saloon. Two with date stamps. Some very minor creasing to corners of a couple of flyers, one flyer with prior fold lines, and one with small stain to bottom of sheet, otherwise overall very good. 4to. Loose as issued. San Francisco, 1978-1989.
This collection of flyers spans roughly a decade of cowboy-themed gay nightlife throughout San Francisco and offers some insight into the popularity and versatility of the genre. Bars with names such as "Covered Wagon Saloon" and "Devil's Herd Saloon" hint at the widespread popularity of cowboy-themed events and cowboy bars in San Francisco in the 1980's. And while some bars and events placed their focus on the live country and western music they offered, others include a wider variety of events, such as cowboy competitions, drag competitions, line dancing classes, and barbeques and other themed food offerings.
