One of the last exhibitions of “Bytie” (Being), a society of “fellow traveler” artists founded by a group of VKhUTEMAS students in 1921. The group broadly exhibited impressionist tendencies, with an emphasis on new Soviet themes. “Bytie” was joined by former members of the avant-garde group Bubnovyi Valet (Jack of Diamonds), and expanded by joining with Novoe Obshchestvo Zhivopistsev (NOZH; New Society of Painters) in 1924. The sixth exhibit showcased 226 works of painting and sculpture by 22 artists including well-established figures such as K. Petrov-Vodkin, Iu. Pimenov, I. Grabar. A. Tyshler, V. Favorskii, R. Falk, D. Shternberg, A. Lentulov. By 1929, when the group was disintegrating due to “unclear goals,” many of its members joined AKhRR (Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia) the artistic organization most directly supported by the Soviet state. See Azarkovich, Vystavki khudozhnikov SSSR, vol. 1, p. 249. As of June 2020, KVK and OCLC show only one copy, at the Frick.
