Trade Catalogs

Group of 18 Early- to Mid-Twentieth Century American Architectural, Construction, and Home Decor Trade Catalogs.

Collection of American home building trade catalogs from the first half of the twentieth century, including examples of catalogs focused on kit and readi-cut houses, stucco house plans, California Colonial house plans, small or modestly priced homes, wood and steel portable garages and other buildings, complete garage sets, lock-joint columns, birch woodwork, heating and air conditioning, small pedestal tables, and vanishing door wardrobes, from companies located in Massachusetts, New York, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and California. Profusely illustrated throughout from photographs, drawings, floor plans, and elevations, including some in color. Various sizes, 8vo. to 4to. All with original wrpps., most illustrated, some scattered toning, minor abrasions, handling wear, etc., overall good to very good condition. Various cities, circa 1903-1956.

Several of the catalogs in this group belong to the category of "kit houses", a type of housing developed largely in Michigan in the early 20th century. Companies like Aladdin and Sterling helped pioneer the technology that sent homes in thousands of pre-cut pieces to be constructed on site. Michigan became the center of kit-home manufacturing.
Other catalogs focus on selling homes through key phrases such as "amazing home values", "homes of moderate cost", and "homes of originality and economy". Dating from the 1930s and 1940s, these home catalogs spoke to the financial concerns of home buyers during the Great Depression and the war years, assuring Americans that "better living" could still be achieved with "practical economy".
