Poster for the Perpetual Fluxus Festival scheduled to be held at Washington Square Gallery at 528 West Broadway, New York, over a series of 26 dates throughout 1964, the poster designed by George Maciunas. Offset lithograph printed in black on thick gray paper. 44 x 41 cm. Slight creasing, overall very fine condition. New York, 1964. Together with: an invitation for Eric Andersen's Opus 45 as part of Perpetual Fluxfest, held at New Cinematheque in New York on July 11, for a limited audience of fifty, 4to, printed black on brown kraft paper; and a xeroxed sheet containing notes on toilet-themed events, not noted but likely for Perpetual Fluxfext 1964, including Bob Watts, Paul Sharits, Joe Jones, George Maciunas, and A-Yo, 4to, some toning and slight discoloration.
The Perpetual Fluxus Festival was planned to consist of appearances, exhibitions, or performances from a large number of noted Fluxus-affiliated artists, including Takako Saito, Robert Watts, Dick Higgins, Joe Jones, A-Yo, George Brecht, Alison Knowles, Diter Rot, Emmett Williams, Philip Corner, Stanley Brouwn, Willem De Ridder, Ben Vautier, and Yoko Ono, among others. However, the Washington Square Gallery closed before all of the events took place. Some of them ended up happening elsewhere, but not all of them were able to proceed as planned.
These three documents are rare relics from an important Fluxus festival. As of September 2021, OCLC only locates one holding of the poster, however we are aware of several institutional holdings in North America. OCLC also located only one holding of the Andersen invitation.
