Conjuring and Rorschach

Die Geister meiner Freunde [The spirits of my friends].

Hamburg: M. Kimmelstiel & Co., [circa 1910]. Small octavo (17.5 × 10.5 cm). Original maroon cloth; with illustration mounted to front cover; [2], [40] leaves, with 39 original inkblot drawings (one page left blank). Some rubbing along spine; else very good.

A curious volume that combines evocative necromancy and the occult with Rorschach-style testing and imagery. The pages were originally left blank; after applying ink to the blank page they were to be folded lengthwise to create a symmetrical "ghost drawing" or "Geisterzeichnung", which was then interpreted or meditated on.

The previous owner occasionally noted places associated with these drawings, including Munich, Budapest, Athens, Strasbourg, Salzburg, Paris, and Padua. These are likely the ghosts' places of residence and not where the owner was located when the drawings were completed.

Likely only a small number of copies were printed for private circulation by the unidentified creator. As of November 2021, we cannot trace any other copies of this work; not in KVK, OCLC.
