Czech Avant-Garde – Photomontage

Prašná Brána [Powder Tower]. Spisy Egona Erwina Kische I [Writings of Egon Erwin Kisch I].

Prague: Pokrok, 1929. Octavo (19 × 12.3 cm). Original wrappers with a photomontage by Vojtěch Tittelbach; 371 pp, [5] pp. Wrappers with crease marks and marginal defects; gatherings partly not bound, as issued; uncut and unopened; else good.

Second edition with the photomontage by Vojtěch Tittelbach, who worked as an illustrator for numerous publishers, such as Svoboda, Družstevní práce, Melantrich, and Československý spisovatel. In the 1920s he was influenced on the one hand by cubism and on the other hand by leftist artists such as George Grosz (AKL CIX, 2020, 301). The series of writings by Kisch gathered numerous interesting photomontages. Particularly noteworthy is the second volume, whose cover was provided with the art-historically important photomontage by Otto Umbehr, which shows Egon Erwin Kisch as a "raving reporter ", whose body is made of machines such as typewriter, camera, gramophone, and airplane.
