Czech Avant-Garde – Cold War – Photomontage

Emil Zátopek.

Prague: Orbis, 1953. Octavo (21 × 15 cm). Original pictorial wrappers; 47, [1] pp. With frontispiece and 6 plates of illustrations printed on both sides. Binding a little rubbed, else good.

The cover shows the three gold medals won by Zátopek at the fifteenth Olympic Games in Helsinki. In the publication, sport and politics are propagandistically connected; the sporting success is linked to the system of the Eastern Bloc. The choice of light blue for the cover is therefore not accidental. In the Warsaw Pact countries, the white dove of peace in front of a blue background was a common symbol. Accordingly, in the publication it is written about victories of the "peace camp" (Friedenslager). The white, running Zátopek in front of a blue background is shown in the photomontage as a real embodiment of the "dove of peace".
