Moscow: Vserabis, 1931. Octavo (26 × 17.5 cm). Original staple-stitched pictorial self-wrappers; 23, pp. Illustrations throughout. Light soil to wrappers, else very good.
Single issue of this journal of the Art Workers’ Trade Union (RABotniki ISkusstva), which united workers of the theater, cinema, the circus, music, photography, and the visual arts. The stated goal of the publication was to help “restructure artistic production” by fighting for “a new administration for the arts,” “a platform for discussing practical issues in art production,” as well as to serve as an organ of “self-critique”. The journal appeared from 1920 to 1934, and published official government proclamations alongside reviews and “self-critical” op-eds. Typical of the early period of the first plan, self-criticism of this sort was gravely discouraged later and considered “anti-revolutionary.” This issue includes articles on Stakhanovite theaters, and a discussion of better theater management practices. Advertising to rear wrappers.
