1930. Kharkiv: "Proletaryi", 1930. Octavo (25 × 18.2 cm). Original decorative wrappers with a constructivist design by Adol'f Strakhov; [4], 47 pp. and [15] leaves of photogravures on better stock, of the one fold-out. Very light wear; else a very good copy, preserving the bright colors of the wrappers.

Scarce official publication announcing a competition for designing the monument to Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861), the Ukrainian national poet. With a brief biography of the writer, a selection of portraits and related iconography, and a bibliography on the topic. Text in Ukrainian and Russian. An expanded edition in Ukrainian, Russian, French, and German was issued with a print run of 1500 copies, but this bi-lingual edition is far less common, being one of 800 copies printed. Both feature a spare yet masterful constructivist wrapper design by Adol'f Strakhov (1896-1979), an important Ukrainian poster and graphic artist, perhaps best known for his design "The Emancipated Woman is Building Socialism" (1926). Strakhov also initially won the competition for the Shevchenko monument, but was forced out due to political reasons, and the monument was completed by Russian sculptor Matvei Manizer. Kharkiv was the capital of the Ukrainian Socialist Republic until 1934. A similar design by Strakhov is featured in the MoMA catalog (907, The Russian Avant-Garde Book, 1910-1934, p. 231). MoMA 908 is the mult-lingual edition. Compare also Getty 646. This edition not in KVK, OCLC, which only show a copy of the expanded edition at IISG, Harvard, and Urbana Champaign.
